The Nut House as it has become known is a 300-year-old stone village house probably built to house workers at the cork factories when production exploded in the 18th century. The house is our home - not a bare holiday let - and most things needed for your stay are included.
Having walls nearly 3 feet thick in places, the house is cool in summer and warm in winter, and now benefits from electric heating in all rooms as well as a cosy antique log burner in the lounge.
Wanting to preserve its character, we have retained the stone staircase and flooring which in places is uneven, so it may not be suitable for persons with impaired mobility. The stairs however are fitted with doors or gates on all floors for the safety of young children.
The cosy lounge with its wooden ceiling, beams and stone floor is entered directly from the street. It has comfortable seating for 5-6 people and includes a double sofa bed, an antique Godin stove for those late autumn and spring evenings, and a selection of books, board games and children’s toys. This is also where you will find toys, beds, parasols and towels for the beach!
The staircase leads to the kitchen/dining area with an extending table seating up to 8, an oven, hob, fridge/freezer, microwave, toaster, coffee-maker and washing machine along with plenty of crockery, cutlery and kitchen utensils.
On the top floor is the bedroom with a double bed, a child’s bed, and plenty of storage. Off the bedroom is the bathroom with toilet, shower and washbasin.
We include bedding and towels for all beds, chargers for mobile phones, a hair dryer, ironing board and iron, TV (with over 200 Orange TV channels in many languages), dvd player, radio/cd player.
Feel free to bring your laptop, iPads etc and leads to connect to the TV to watch via the internet with our free wifi.
We operate a policy where basic toiletries, washing powder, washing up liquid etc are supplied; we just ask that you replace what you use! This means there is no need to bring anything with you if flying, to help reduce your luggage. We also aim to keep a stock of basic kitchen supplies, sauces and condiments for you when you arrive.
The same applies to the wine rack and beer in the fridge. Feel free to drink - just replace what you use.
For visitors with young children, we provide a travel cot, high chair, buggy, toys, games and books to keep them happy!
We also have a cctv camera fitted at the front door covering the area immediately outside, this is for your security and is only monitored by myself but if you prefer to have the camera switched off after your arrival please just ask.
As we live in the UK we do not often meet our guests in person but we have a representative on hand in the village to meet you and help in any way they can.
The village of La Garde Freinet is located 10 miles (16km) from the coast and St Tropez at the top of the Massif des Maures.
Located close to several long-distance paths, it is ideal walking and cycling country for nature-lovers, outdoor sports enthusiasts, beach-lovers and those who want to mix with the rich and famous.
Just over an hour's drive in several directions will bring you Monaco to the East, Marseille to the West, and the Gorges of Verdon to the North. Cannes, Grasse, Toulon and all the famous resorts of the French Riviera are all around 40 minutes away, providing something for everyone.
The village is busy all year round and boasts over 12 places to eat and drink, 2 bakeries, 2 general shops, 2 hairdressers, 2 butchers, a filling station and several art galleries and tourist shops.
The public transport is limited in the area and a car or motorcycle is advisable.
The quickest and cheapest way to travel is by budget airline. Flights usually cost £40-£120 return depending on the season. Nice or Marseille are both just over an hour from the village; Toulon is about 50 minutes away, but flights tend to be more expensive.
You will need a hire car as the public transport is not abundant in the area, but a small car is usually about £100 a week at most times of the year.
There is also the Eurostar/TGV train service direct from the UK changing in Paris to Marseille where you can once again pick up a hire car.
The third option which is ideal for a longer stay or a leisurely journey, is to drive.
