"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole ... it was a hobbit-hole and that meant comfort."
This handcrafted, sustainable Hobbit Hole is a unique and inspiring place to call home in Portland! Inspired by the Lord of the Rings, our earthen home provides insulation, sound barrier and loads of charm. We painstakingly reclaimed the clay produced from the excavation for our precious Hobbit Hole and turned that into the tree roots that adorn the ceiling.
Reclaimed and sustainable materials are throughout the space including a beautiful arched former church door located near the kitchenette. Local artisan friends poured their hearts into the cabinetry and woodwork.
Once through the door of your private entrance, you'll find your enchanting home away from home. The bedroom area has an incredibly comfortable queen bed with a memory foam mattress.
Back through the entryway and around the corner you'll find the common area with cozy seating and dining table, the handcrafted kitchenette with all the basics including a microwave, mini fridge/freezer, coffee maker and electric kettle (no burner or stovetop, sorry).
This space is adorned with a reclaimed Swarovski crystal chandelier that makes for a magical ambiance, a leather sofa that easily converts to a second comfortable queen bed, and the European-style tiled bathroom with shower, sink, toilet. We welcome even the tiniest adventurers and can provide a Pack n Play (portable crib) with sheets and have other child amenities available - just ask! We want this to be the most memorable Airbnb experience you've ever had!

We are so proud of our Hobbit Hole and are eager to share it with you. While we lead busy lives, you might just catch us or our friendly, non-shedding poodle-mix Velma in the backyard or on the front porch. We love sharing our passion for the city with our guests and look forward to hosting you!
"Where there's life there's hope, and need of vittles." And you'll find some of the best Portland has to offer just outside our doorstep!
Smack dab in the heart of the trendy Hawthorne shopping, dining and exploring strip, we are just footsteps from everything you need including New Seasons organic grocery store around the corner from the house and a ton of excellent dining options nearby. If you've always wondered what it's like to live in Portland, check out our neighborhood.
Like most of the city, we are allowable of marijuana use in the backyard but please, no smoking or vaping inside the house. Take your pipeweed, tobacco and cannabis outside!
Easy bike parking provided at the house (in the backyard). Biketown is a bike share program - perfect for travelers, with stops located all over the city and a convenient rental program. There's a bike share station just steps from the Hobbit Hole!
While in town, we recommend using the Trimet app for negotiating Portland transit - it makes trip planning and ticket purchasing effortless. High frequency buses #14 and #75 are just a block away.
Car Share: Car2Go, ReachNow & ZipCar plus driver services like Uber and Lyft are available.
From the airport:
TRANSIT: Take the max train that stops at the airport to Hollywood Transit Center. Transfer to the 75 bus towards Milwaukie. Exit at Cesar Chavez & Hawthorne. Walk one block to 40th Avenue. Take a right at the New Seasons grocery store. Our house is the second on the left.
DRIVE: We recommend using ride share, bike, walking, and transit in our neighborhood. It's easy to rent a car for a day trip to Multnomah Falls or the coast. Driving from the airport: Exit the airport and follow the signs to I-205 South. Take exit for I-84 WEST. Exit at 42nd Avenue. Take a left on Halsey. Take a left on Cesar Chavez. Go straight (including through traffic circle) until you reach SE Hawthorne BLVD. Take a left. Take your first right at New Seasons. We are the second house on the left and parking is available along the street.
Velma, our 15lb, friendly dog lives in the main house above and spends time in the back yard which is where the entrance to the Hobbit Hole can be found.
Folks over 6' tall will need to mind their heads in a few spots.
The Hobbit Hole is located in the basement of our home so if you are extremely sensitive to the sound of occasional footsteps above, we might not be the best fit.
